Song for voice and piano with words by Ada Harrison, transcribed and edited by Liz Lane.

Vocal range: e’ to e”

In 1938 Muriel Herbert had written Merry-Go-Round, a collection of songs for children with words by Ada Harrison, who was then a neighbour in Chiswick. Harrison’s poem ‘The Days of November’ was set by Muriel Herbert in the early 1940s. The composer’s daughter Claire Tomalin writes: ‘I can just remember my mother writing this small song with its elegiac feeling’. The title of the setting, ‘Hips and Haws’, was the composer’s.
