Description

Part-song for SATB, op. 71/1, edited by Robert Parker and Sandra Tuppen

Words by Henry Vaughan

Elgar composed ‘The Shower’ in 1914 as the first of ‘Two part-songs’, op. 71, ‘The Fountain’ being the second. Both are settings from poems by Henry Vaughan (1621-1695). ‘The Shower’ was dedicated to a former neighbour of the Elgars in Malvern, but the inspiration for it may have come from the place-name Elgar put below the final bar, Mill Hill, which recalled for him an afternoon spent in what was then countryside with his friend Alice Stuart Wortley.
