Description

Part-song for SATB, op. 71/2, edited by Robert Parker and Sandra Tuppen

Words by Henry Vaughan

Elgar composed ‘The Fountain’ in 1914 as the second of ‘Two part-songs’, op. 71, ‘The Shower’ being the first. Like ‘The Shower’, it is a setting from a poem by Henry Vaughan (1621 –1695). The song was dedicated to an old friend of Elgar’s from Worcester Cathedral Choir, but seems to have been inspired by a visit to Totteridge, then a rural parish north of London, which Elgar made with his wife in 1913.
